There’s nothing quite like hitting the open road with no concrete plans and the promise of freedom on the horizon. However, camping fees can add up fast, especially if you’re on a long road trip or living the van life. But it doesn’t have to be this way! If you’re planning a trip to Idaho and want to keep your travel budget as low as possible, there are some excellent camping sites scattered across the state that you can call home for a night or two without spending a single cent.

To make finding these easier, we’ve collected them all in this guide. And, because we know that every good camping trip is about the whole adventure, not just where you’re sleeping, you’ll even find details on what you can do in the immediate area.

Are you ready? Let’s find a dispersed camping site you’ll love!

Idado Free Camping Areas – Boondocking & Dispersed Camping Sites

Each of these campgrounds is totally free to stay at, but it’s important to note that they’re only suitable for RV camping. Big Bar Camping Area

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in Idaho

Cuprum, Idaho

Set just off the NF-454 and along the banks of the mighty Snake River, the Big Bar Camping Area is a no-frills campground that offers you a chance to reconnect with nature and get that authentic camping experience.

Managed by the Payette National Forest, the sites here are offered on a first-come-first-served basis, and while you won’t have access to the kind of facilities you’d find in full-service RV parks, there are vault toilets and picnic tables that you’re welcome to use. Just remember to follow the Leave No Trace principles when camping here, taking all your trash with you when you depart.

Being able to camp here for free is just one of the perks of staying at Big Bar. It’s also a favorite among anglers, rafters, and anyone who just wants to lounge riverside with a cold drink and a good book. It’s also just 30 minutes from Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, where you can get incredible views of North America’s deepest gorge.

Lolo Pass Rest Area

Creek near Lolo Pass, Montana

Kooskia, Idaho

If your journey takes you along Highway 12 and you’re approaching the border between Idaho and Montana, one of the best dispersed camping spots you could ever hope to find is Lolo Pass Rest Area. This isn’t your average roadside stop but a retreat set within a forest, giving you a peaceful place to spend the night without reaching for your wallet.

There’s an 8-hour stay limit here, and you can’t sleep outside of your campervan, but the amenities are pretty good. These include flushing toilets, trash cans, and a picnic area. It’s also pet-friendly, which is ideal if you’ve brought your furry best friend along for the journey. And, since you’re so close to the Lolo Pass Visitor Center, you’re perfectly placed to learn more about the surrounding Nez-Perce Clearwater National Forests and pick up a winter recreation pass if you’re traveling at that time of year. Just note that the camping area is signposted, and you can’t pull up by the Visitor Center itself, as overnight camping here isn’t allowed.

Along with the surrounding forest, you’ll find some fantastic nearby attractions and activities when you’re camping here. For starters, the Jerry Johnson Hot Springs are only 30 minutes away, giving you the chance to soak in geothermal pools surrounded by mountains. Or, if you’re willing to travel a little further out, an hour on the road will take you to the Lewis & Clark Historic Trail, where you can retrace the footsteps of two of America’s most iconic explorers.

Blacks Creek Rest Area

Fall colors on the Boise River greenbelt in Boise, Idaho

Boise, Idaho

Eastbound travelers heading along the I-84 near Boise can find surprisingly decent free camping at Blacks Creek Rest Area. While this isn’t the kind of place where you’re going to roast marshmallows over a campfire, it’s a safe, quiet place to catch some sleep before heading out on the next leg of your journey.

The amenities here include flushing toilets, a picnic area, and trash cans. There are also 10 sites in total, so there’s a good chance of finding a spot. Just note that you’re limited to a maximum stay of 8 hours, so make sure you hit the road again within this time frame. This obviously limits your chances to explore the area, but if you plan your itinerary carefully, this is a good place to camp after a day of adventure.

For instance, this rest area is just 20 minutes away from the Boise River Greenbelt, which is perfect for a long walk or bike ride. Likewise, if you’re into bird watching or just love peaceful nature scenes, Blacks Creek gives you a comfortable place to camp just 40 minutes from Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. And when you’re ready to head off the next morning, you’re only 15 minutes from Downtown Boise, where you can grab some supplies or grab brunch at the Basque Market.

Snake River View Rest Area (Eastbound)

Snake River at Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in Oregon and Idaho, USA

Fruitland, Idaho

Another excellent choice if you’re heading along the I-84, Snake River View Rest Area (Eastbound) is one of the more scenic rest areas you’ll find in Idaho, with its namesake view of Snake River right from the door of your RV. It also faces west, which means you’ve got some fantastic sunset photo opportunities.

Like most rest areas in Idaho, there’s an 8-hour maximum stay limit, but that’s ideal if you’re simply looking for an overnight stop on your journey. You won’t find any hookups or fancy amenities, but there are flushing toilets at the Snake River View Welcome Center (just 100m from the rest area), as well as picnic tables and trash cans. You’re also allowed to camp here with your dog, but make sure you keep them on a lead outside of your RV.

Similarly to Blacks Creek, this is a great spot to park after a day of exploring the local area, and there’s plenty on offer. Since you’re right on the Idaho / Oregon border, a 10-minute drive will take you to the Four Rivers Cultural Center and Museum, which celebrates the region’s Native American, Japanese, Basque, and Latino routes with a range of engaging exhibits. And, if you still want more history after that, a 15-minute stretch of road takes you to The Payette County Museum, where you’ll learn more about the area’s pioneer and railroad history. Or, for something a little more luxurious, take the 40-minute drive to Huston Vineyards and enjoy a wine-tasting session in a beautiful setting.

Midvale Hill Rest Area

Mann Creek Dam and Reservoir near Weiser, Idaho

Midvale, Idaho

Just off US-95, the Midvale Hill Rest Area is a great free camping option if you’re looking to break up a long drive with a peaceful overnight stay. There’s plenty of parking available here, too, so there’s less need to worry about finding a spot, and while it’s fairly basic, there are some good amenities that make it comfortable to camp here.

These include flushing toilets, trash cans, and picnic tables. The sites are spacious, too, making it big-rig friendly, and the only real restriction you need to be aware of is that you’re limited to a maximum stay of 8 hours. However, again, this makes it a great spot for simple overnight RV camping after a day of exploring the local attractions.

In terms of what you can find nearby before calling it a night, you’re just 20 minutes away from the town of Weiser, which is famous for its National Oldtime Fiddler’s Contest every summer. Even if you’re not here for the music, you’re perfectly positioned to explore the local shops and cafes, stocking up on supplies for the rest of your journey. You’re also only 10 minutes from Mann Creek Reservoir, which is a beautiful, quiet spot for kayaking and fishing.
