Driving Tips for Driving Your Campervan or RV in Death Valley National Park
Prepare for Extreme Heat
Death Valley is known for its intense temperatures, especially from late spring through early fall. Make sure your campervan is in good working order, carry plenty of water, and avoid driving during the hottest part of the day where possible. Heat can be just as challenging for vehicles as it is for people.
Watch Long Grades & Steep Descents
Although the landscape looks flat in places, Death Valley features long climbs and steep downhill sections, particularly when entering or exiting the park. Use lower gears on descents, drive steadily, and allow extra stopping distance to avoid overheating brakes.
Fuel Up Before Entering the Park

We do have strict restrictions for traveling through the Death Valley. This is really more for your & the campervan’s safety – 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) is simply too hot.
As such we don’t allow any travel through the Death Valley between the 1st of May to 30th of September each year; at any other time, you are more than welcome to explore Death Valley.
